Capacity and Strengths Building Program

This program was developed after GEM recognized a significant gap in the capacity of services in the Syrian context. GEM has documented numerous cases of violence and discrimination by aid workers and activists against LGBTQIA+ individuals. While we cannot blame those aid workers for lacking the necessary training to work effectively with LGBTQIA+ individuals, we take responsibility for building their capacity. GEM has conducted assessments, including with CSOs and NGOs, many of which expressed the need for training to better understand and engage in LGBTQIA+ sensitivity work. However, many aid workers continue to face confusion and challenges when dealing with LGBTQIA+ individuals. Awareness and capacity-building are the solutions, not assigning blame.

We specialize in providing awareness and knowledge, as well as addressing capacity-building needs for multiple target group. Such as the LGBTQIA+ induvial and communities themselves and the service providers who work with LGBTQIA+ Individuals. This includes service providers, human rights defenders, humanitarian workers, and activists across different topics such as SOGIESC, advocacy, livelihoods, professional training, and protections.

For Service Providers:

We offer specialized training programs called SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Expression, and Sex Characteristics) for service providers and human rights activists from various sectors, including mental health, public health, civil society, human rights, protection, and case management workers, among others. Our SOGIESC training is a standardized program that equips participants with both basic and advanced knowledge. It helps them become professionally sensitive to the needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Those who complete this training should be able to work effectively and sensitively with LGBTQIA+ individuals and stakeholders, whether they interact with them occasionally or on a full-time basis.

Capacity Building for the Syrian LGBTQIA+ Community:

GEM is committed to providing capacity-building programs through training and various tools designed for LGBTQIA+ individuals, defenders of LGBTQIA+ rights, and political actors within the LGBTQIA+ community.

These programs also focus on capacity-building aimed at improving livelihoods, job opportunities, and personal development. This sustainable intervention seeks to enhance the dignity and rights and protection, of Syrian LGBTQIA+ individuals, both inside Syria and in the diaspora.
